Stashbusting July 11, 2010

I didn’t order or receive any fabric this week. But I am working on getting a quilt finished. I’ve been busy machine quilting. I have to laugh because I did this on my first free motion quilt and said I learned my lesson but I did it again. I spent hours marking this quilt with a stipple stencil. But when I got my quilt up on the table and started sewing, I had such a hard time seeing some of the markings. I should have tried pouncing but I tried to use a blue marking pen/white chalk pencil. I could see the blue on the white and the white on the black but boy it was tough to see the markings on the aqua and some of the orange. So I just started sewing. Some spots are better than others. The practice is good. I got about 1/3 of the way finished. So maybe next weekend, I’ll be able to count this as finished.

Cute fabric – I like the stippling in black.

Re: stitching in the ditch — I normally stitch down all the straight lines when I quilt. I find that since I quilt on my home machine, the quilt sandwich when basted is not as taut as it would be if it were quilted and stretched on a long arm. So, stitching down all the straight lines seems to take up a bit of the slack. And yes, I do stitch down the quilt edge – that way, they don’t stretch from being handled while quilting.

Well I think you meandering looks great. It is difficult to let go of the lines and just trust you instinct. It also goes faster that way. Keep at it and you will soon have this one in the “done” pile.

Really, it’s like coloring outside the lines, if you are stippling, or meandering, just go for it! I have a great time making hearts, swirls, loops or writing. Hey, I think you’re doing great, every attempt brings a lesson.
Oh, and congratulations, grandma in waiting! I’m so happy for your news.
