Despicable Me movie

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Tonight was date night. Mr. Nice Guy and I went shopping and out to see Despicable Me. Such a cute show! This one is a keeper. I can’t wait for it to come out on DVD.

As we left the movie theater, these cute little guys were crossing the street. Everyone stopped for them. I looked around at some of the other drivers and everyone had big huge smiles on their faces. It was neat. The perfect ending to a perfect day!

Autocomplete is disabled!

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I was just reading a cute story on someone else’s blog about a typo that occurred when her husband sent a text message because of auto-complete. This happens to me frequently. Tonight however, I have had all I can take. I was trying to type fabrics and ended up with familybs. Once your done, you can’t take it back. Holy cow! I cringe everytime I think about it. I left a second apology post but crud, the damage is done. So if I’ve been to your blog and left the most ridiculous post, I’m sorry. I’m really not an insensitive oaf. And thank you google for helping me turn this stupid feature off.

Liar Liar, Pants on Fire

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

My husband and I are low maintenance customers. If we don’t like something, we don’t get mad. We usually just don’t go back. life is short and real life teaches you what really is a battle. Don’t misunderstand, I can do battle when needed. But I choose my battles carefully. I also work with the public. I happen to work for a business that sets a high bar on customer service. I like treating people well and taking care of them. It gives me joy. I also know what it means to make a mistake. You might as well belly up to the bar and take it like a man because it won’t go away. I have found that the person who makes the mistake is usually the one that feels the worse.

My fabric finally arrived yesterday 11 days after I ordered it from a quilt shop one hour away. I have been anxiously waiting on this fabric because I needed it for a current project.

The part that bothers me is the customer service. I called twice last week to check because it should been a one day deliver, two days at most. Frankly, I don’t have much faith in the Post Office. They have lost a few things over the years. I was assured by the quilt shop that it was mailed last Tuesday. This Tuesday (one week after the mailing date), I took a late lunch to run home and check the mail. Nothing. I call again and really got a defensive answer that the gal mailing it forgot and she put it in the mail yesterday (June 21).

I didn’t get mad. I told them my concern was that it was lost in the mail and it looked like I should have by Wednesday. They agreed. Well, Wednesday and Thursday brought nothing. Finally in Friday’s mail, the package arrives and it is postmarked Wednesday June 23. Seriously? Why lie to me? I guess I don’t really understand why a business would treat the customer that way. It’s just a little disappointing. I was telling Mr. Nice Guy about it and he said that’s what I get for being Mrs. Nice Guy. I started to write a letter but if you lie to your customers, your probably not going to care. I’m not going to say I’ll never shop there again but they will be at the bottom of the list.

I just needed to vent. Thanks for listening.

I just ran out of thread. Seriously!…

Sometimes you just have to laugh at yourself!

Mr. Nice Guy is on evening shift this week so I am sewing like a bandit. I decided to get started on the machine quilting on my Disappearing 9 patch quilt. It was already marked so I thought I’m going to get this puppy finished. The stitching is going fairly well. Doing much better on a consistent stitch length. Not perfect but much improved. For the most part, staying on the lines I marked from the stencil. I completed all but 2 columns. I can hear the song in my head, “Grease lighting, go grease lighting”. I decided it was time to take a break. Got this brilliant idea to take a picture of my progress for the blog. I flip the quilt over and set it on the couch so I can take a photo. See picture below. I just had to laugh. Well crap, it doesn’t pay to get too smug, does it? :)

Stashbusting May 23, 2010

We spent last week with my son who graduated from college. After graduation, we got to visit the zoo in Tucson on Sunday. Above is a picture of my son, my husband and myself at the Desert Museum. We flew home on Monday but both of us returned to work. Yesterday, I met my youngest for lunch and then was able to get myself scheduled for an emergency hair appointment. Thank you Mariah for taking pity on me! So not a lot of free time. But was so very glad to have had the opportunity to go to Tucson. So no complaints.

My husband and I got to do a little sightseeing on our own. Mr Nice Guy went to two quilt shops with me. My favorite was the Quilter’s Market on Speedway. They put great effort into their quilt displays etc. It was probably one of the nicest organized shops I’ve been in. They just carried several of my favorite colors and styles so I really liked this shop. Some traditional but lots of contemporary too. One room was dedicated to babies which was cute. I somehow managed to leave without any fabric. But I picked up a couple of Quiltmaker Quilting Design CDs and a Skillbuilder Mastery booklet since I’m trying to improve my free motion skills.

I completely lost my discipline once I returned home and had my laptop in hand. I just had this burning desire this week to order some more charm packs. Plume’s been on my want list for awhile. Love those vibrant colors. So I was looking on Crazyquiltgirl Fabric Shop. She also had charms for Martinique, Park Avenue and Lumiere de noel. They all looked so elegant and pretty. So I ordered 2 charm packs of everything. First time I ordered from this shop. I already have my order and it was good pricing. Anyhow, not sure I will be any better disciplined this next week. I’ve been reading quilt blogs with quilt market news all weekend.

Miscalculated last week while out on the road. So here are the correct numbers.

Used this Week: 0 yards
Used year to Date: 22.25 yards
Added this Week: 9 yards
Added Year to Date: 35.625 yards
Net Used for 2010: -13.375 yards

Nothing much to report. I have the Frolic quilt layers all pinned together, the top is marked and ready to start quilting. I got back to my practice on free motion. I could definitely tell the difference from not practicing for awhile. Yikes! I did two fat quarter wholecloths. This is the stencil from Sue Nickels’ class. I did a terrible job tracking back over my previous stitched lines on the feather. This is the first practice piece. But I love the chocolate fabric. I’m going to bind it and put it on the kitchen table. It matches the formica on my countertop. The 2nd one was better. So hopefully, the third time should be the charm on the Frolic quilt. I’m not doing feathers but hearts stacked on top of each other so I will have to trace back over some previous stitching.

Today was actually one of those great lazy Sundays. I woke up around 8:30. Checked e-mail, read blogs, etc. Laid back down and slept until noon. I never do that. It was great!

A loved quilt

My daughter e-mailed me yesterday to tell me how much she loves the quilt. She already has it on her bed.

Sunday, I started squaring up all of my charm squares. They are supposed to be square but they really aren’t. Because I’m compulsive obsessive, I have to square them up. I make enough mistakes quilting that I don’t need any help with fabric not cut quite accurately. But I love charm squares and I love the concept of spending $8 to have one or two of every piece in a line. It’s very economical.

Anyhow, my plan as of now is to make a disappearing 9-patch. The charms are laid out, I just need to start stitching the 9-patches together. Will keep you posted on the progress.
